About the ministry

In the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Interior we work to provide changes which benefit the disadvantaged citizens in our society . We provide the change through professionalism, co-operation and by developing and implementing effective methods.

At the same time the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Interior works to improve the framework for and the economy in municipalities and regions . We do so by making knowledge available and by working for effective management and monitoring of the responsibilities, the structure and the economy of the municipalities and the regions.

The Ministries tasks span from analysis, development of effective policies in the area of social affairs to the responsibility for management of and economy in municipalities and regions. We also functions as the supreme authority for elections and referenda.

The Ministry of Social Affairs and the Interior is responsible for the following policy areas:

  • Disadvantaged Children

  • Marginalized Adults

  • People with Disabilities

  • Civil Society

  • Family Law

  • International Collaboration and Responsibility

  • Governance of Municipalities and Regions

  • Economics of Municipalities and Regions

  • Elections and Referenda

The Minister

Karen Ellemann is Minister for Social Affairs and the Interior.

Formerly, Karen Ellemann has been the Minister for the Environment and Minister for Nordic Cooperation from February 23rd 2010 until October 3rd 2011, and Minister of the Interior and Social Affairs from April 7th 2009 until February 23rd 2010. Since November 13th 2007 she has been a Member of Parliament for the Liberal Party in Greater Copenhagen greater constituency.
